The Collective rises

I have spent the last few days listening to international authors talk about our world…as it once was and as it is now. We reflected on the rapid changes we have undergone this century and, particularly, in the last decade or so. The constant theme in all the discussions, was the impact of social media.

Yesterday a panel asked the question: Do books still matter?

Authors agreed they did, however all spoke of the downgrade in discourse, language and literacy and the rise of populism resulting from ‘social media’. Prominent UK author Alexander McCall Smith gave a fictitious example in a recent short story of the taxi driver who was reasonable and pleasant to his customers and then had to ‘go to taxi driver school to learn how to be confrontational’.

Other panel members spoke about the reactive and ‘angry’ discourse on social media. People were always reacting to something yet it was initially thought social media would help build positive interactive communities. In some ways it has fulfilled its initial reason for being, yet we cannot ignore the damage it has wrought on our civil society when AI generated militia pages are circulated to contest a free and fair election if the result does not go the way of a particular candidate, and where violence is threatened and organised, and activated.

When Pluto moved into Aquarius on November 19, 2024 we all breathed a sigh of relief. Surely now the power was in the collective hands. What we failed to realise is the extent we would have to wrestle power back from the all pervading oligarchy that has been built around social media…the so called tech billionaires, among them the reported richest man in the world Elon Musk (yes I did nearly forget his name after calling him Leon Musk for so long).

Ironic indeed that their fortunes have grown on the content ‘we the people’ provide them with daily, free! Ironic isn’t it that this free content we provide empowers them into positions where they become unelected officials in a government with the power to take away our social security pensions, and our cries fall powerlessly on their social media. If it seems like a giant con, it’s because it is and has been.

And when we consider all of this, we realise why Pluto in Aquarius will uncover corruption and, with effort, return the power to the collective. Already we are building new social media less prone to oligarchical takeovers, and using and nourishing independent media while rejecting legacy media.

After the US election I felt the energy of revolutions of the past, not the American revolution but the French Revolution. Yes, a revolution is coming, one where the people will stand up to the privileged and the obscenely corrupt profiting from power. They should watch themselves. As we’ve seen in Syria and are witnessing in Georgia, people power is a force that can overturn corrupt regimes and, with persistence, be a rallying cry that would curdle the blood of the tyrant and his armies.

Time to reflect. My break away with authors, writers and journalists on the ocean and traveling to Tasmania, has been good for the soul. New perspective has altered my bitterness and cynicism post US election, into a healthy realism that has new insight and purpose. This is a time for collective power to rise.

  5. I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest everyone consider reading the new book called “Let Them” by Mel Robbins, which comes out 24 December. She addresses exactly what you’re referring to with social media and the behavior of grown adults in this world and at this time. The book will help you get out of the controlling way that we feel right now and allow you to free up yourself from frustrating and aggravating situations around the world that we have no control over.

It IS challenging but being real people reaching out does make a difference especially for young people who do feel isolated in their pain. Social media can be a tool for good, as your channel is. A Revolution is needed, and Our Minds are starting to realise we’ve been controlled by many authorities, For many many years. There’s no stronger power than the power of the People.   11. Yes, books are still necessary. My goodness, my Kindle data recorded me at having read over 230 books last year alone. I’m 69 years old and can’t imagine a life without books. We need the access to an eclectic mix or literature and information by which we alone can digest, interpret, utilize for ourselves, and think about without outside influence.

    I can see a revolution of the people forming more and more. It reminds me of the 60’s. It’s refreshing to see a collective of people standing up, not just for a few, but for all.

  21. Fabulous blog! I’d love to see you do some readings on our situation in Australia & the upcoming election. Our own ultra right wing Trump mini me Peter Dutton is gaining traction with lies & misinformation about the cost of nuclear power even though all the experts including CSIRO have said it’s financially exceedingly much more expensive than the renewables path we are now on. Of course his “ go nuclear” is to delay the uptake of renewables to benefit Gina Reinhardt & other big donor fossil fuel companies. Then there is what happened in the U.S. blaming the cost of living crisis on our current government who although not perfect are doing a fairly good job. This week the LNP lost another centrist so the Duttonites aka Trumpists pretty much now control the party.

  23. Yes, French Revolution vibes for me too. The most glaring example for me is the United Heathcare CEO incident and the support some members of the public have shown the shooter. It’s so unfortunate that two lives are lost to the cause and that it came to this. Sadly, I can picture Marie Antoinette’s end in that story. Thank you Maryann.

  25. This was an enlightening read. I’ve often thought that video gaming and online social media is, in reality, very antisocial and destructive.

    Whilst I am anti violence and anti guns, the recent murder of the CEO had me thinking that (1) this wasn’t a shock due to the overall hatred of medical insurance companies, and (2) the incoming government might do well to remember that you can only push people so far, especially if you are taking things away from them. People will rise up. We are the many and the “leaders” are the few.

    Fellow Aussie here, and with an Australian election coming, I wondered if you could do a reading on what is to come for us. I always felt whatever was to come for the rest of the world, we would be relatively removed from it down here. I’m not so sure now.

  44. As a Canadian I am worried that the leader of the Conservative party is resorting to the same tactics as did 45 (respecting your not using his name). I am also afraid that Canada may be the next victim of voters throwing out the ruling party with no clear idea of what the Opposition will actually do? (His tag line is “let’s bring it home” what does that even mean?) 45 has also managed to get the Opposition questioning what Trudeau is going to do about the ‘border crisis’ (45 lb. of fentanyl as compared with 20,000 lb. from Mexico and approximately 23,000 illegal immigrants as opposed to 1.5 million from Mexico (statistics from Legal AF). So again, 45 is creating chaos which could cost us an election for a big gaslighting project. I hear about resistance but I fear they may be overestimating the strength of their ‘guardrails’.   57. I just finished reading the book “How to Stand Up to a Dictator” by Maria Ressa, the recipient of the 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. She tells” the story of how the creep toward authoritarianism, in the Philippines and around the world, has been aided and abetted by social media companies- particularly Mark Zuckerberg’s Facebook. Ressa exposes how they have allowed their platforms to spread a virus of lies that infects each of us, pitting us against one another, igniting, even creating, our fears, anger, and hate, and how this has accelerated the rise of authoritarians and dictators are the world.” I feel this is a must read book if you really want to know what happened and is happening now.

What seemed to be a fab new way of communicating with everyone everywhere has turned into nothing more than the rich getting richer off the poor/middle class.   83. I totally agree with you….social media has a lot to answer for. I’m so glad Australia has banned it for under 16’s. The populace has lost the ability to communicate on an intelligent level. Children grow up with a sense of entitlement and a total lack of respect and empathy. I am 68 years old and recently retired. I grew up in the 50/60’s. We weren’t rich, but life was good and more often than not, you could trust your fellow man and didn’t have to lock your front door. Love your emails, they are definitely food for thought.   92. What a wonderful, timely message. Revolution energy is frightening to me. I’ve been studying religious history in conjunction with getting more familiar with astrology (I wouldn’t dare to say I’m “learning” it). There’s another interesting correlation I learned yesterday. Pluto was at 6 degrees Aquarius when the Jewish Roman war broke out in 66 AD. AND the 2nd Temple of Jerusalem was destroyed on August 30, 70 AD after Uranus moved into Aquarius (it was at 1 degree). Interesting.

The Oligarchy has worked for years to make us poorer, less educated, less healthy, more divided from each other as citizens, and more angry towards the government about our personal circumstances. They have weaseled their way into all seats of power with money and threats, appealing to people’s weakest urges.
    But since Oligarchs operate on the principle that everyone has their price—lawmakers, law enforcement, the courts, it makes ’em arrogant and sloppy. It only takes a few good people to take on the fight. They expose the truth, wherever and however they can, they doggedly pursue evidence and take the arrogant to court, win important cases. The rest of us can stay informed, support these brave social warriors when we can. Our kind of revolution can’t involve guns, just persistence, patience and courage.

I am grateful to live in the SF Bay Area, where most people are progressive, but I know it is going to be a struggle to keep what we have. I am no longer listening to news (even MSNBC) but know that we will have to find a way to organize against the lies and find the light.   118. I am there with you. I heard on the radio just recently that college professors are having to dumb down their curriculum because the students can’t read. Instead of assigning 5 books a semester, it is down to 1 and no more than 10 pages to read as an assignment. They are blaming the use of iPads and phones and shorthand for this turn of events.

  121. I think, too, the decline in book reading is in part because we have every bit of information or entertainment in the palm of our hands with cell phones and tablets. I’m a library director and, other than women over 50, our patrons numbers have declined steadily for years. It’s troubling, to say the least.
