Why did that happen?

Post US election and since the Covid pandemic hit, we are all still searching for the why? Why has the world become such a tough and brutal place. If you’re empathetic in any way, you’re having trouble reconciling all of this with your belief that the Universe is mostly benevolent.

After November 5, 2024 particularly, the world has changed for many of us. There is significant grieving in the US, so much so that it feels palpable. We are still searching for a reason why a serial liar, self confessed predator of women and would be insurrectionist got picked by 49% of those Americans who turned up to vote. The other choice was an ethical, female politician offering $25,000 to Americans to help them build homes. Understandably, we are looking for a narrative to explain the travesty. Was the election stolen? Let the incoming president blow himself and those who voted for him up? The media is to blame? Russia interfered in the election and tech bro Elon Musk did too? Ignorant MAGA and its supporters know no better? The vote was suppressed? Our society is misogynistic, racist and bigoted?

What if I said there was a degree of truth in all of the above to explain the why. Russia did interfere with massive misinformation campaigns and bomb threats, Musk potentially violated Pennsylvania lottery laws when he offered $1m to eligible voters who registered GOP voters and the US Department of Justice warned him about ‘buying votes’. The voter suppression was a fact. Huge swathes of voters were purged off roles in North Carolina and Texas. The media hasn’t even begun to investigate the real extent of voter purging and something else too, missing ballots.

The real kicker…all the fraud theories under the sun do not disguise the obvious misogyny, racism and ignorance out there in certain sections of society and the clear drift towards fascism.

There is no doubt that Trump will fail this term for many reasons including that he is a ‘lame duck’ president – one who is elected for one term only with no possible chance of a second term, and expiring by a set date under law. His bent for retribution, using the military to round up illegal immigrants, his shocking and unqualified cabinet picks, the razor thin majorities, his undoubted weakening of the economy in the future with tariffs…all of that is true and so is the buyer’s remorse that goes with it. Already record numbers are flocking to google to search for ‘how can I change my vote’.

There is ample evidence from recent studies that X was used to distort and boost algorithms in favour of the incoming president. Facebook AI allowed an enduring number of militia pages to spring up as MAGA supporters readied for another round of Stop the Steal violence. Intimidation at polls, burning of ballet boxes, all added up.

The recount in Pennsylvania between incumbent Democratic Senator Bob Casey and MAGA would be Senator McCormick is a litmus test for the electoral system. If any fraud is present, it will be outed in that recount. We will know if the election interference by Musk and his satellites is mere conspiracy and election denial or if it holds credence.

And so confusion, grief, outrage and denial is all well founded in the US and around the world at this time and we should recognise that is the space we are coming from…as people search for their narratives to ease their pain, it is important to remember that all is not lost. We will see that in time when the fog clears.

In the meantime, we can resist any attempt to back away from our values. While we may be cynical for awhile, and reclusive too, in the end we know we must continue to stand up to fascism, to fight for voters’ rights and to create the kind of world we want to live in, and for generations to come.

Stop searching for a narrative. Be in the present moment and know that, ultimately, MAGA will implode and its leader will one day be a nightmare from which we awoke. Stay away from election analysis because it’s currently distorted. A week ago they were telling us MAGA had a mandate. Today they’ve gone silent because after votes were being finalised in places like California, it turned out MAGA’s lead was about 1%. Vice President Harris finished on 48% and the MAGA leader on 49%.

Over the next months and years, if the election recounts don’t uncover fraud, you can take heart that this is an era where Trump voters get that kick in the ass, and you get your vindication.

    3. It kind of feels like we are waiting for the “other” shoe to drop. Not sure what that will look or feel like. Will it wake up the masses? Will it strike at the heart of the US? Will it strike at 45? Musk? Like many, I turned off the “news” even before the election and have yet to turn it back on.     Grieving indeed. Disbelief and anger mostly, but a mixture of disgust, especially the amount of cheating that is obvious. The MAGA picks for Trumps cabinet is absolutely beyond belief. But, I’m mostly sad that the Trump trials have literally disappeared and Jack Smith will likely have to hide in some way from Trump’s revenge. As usual the MAGA senate has overrun the Republican Senators and no one knows how cowardly they might turn out to be. Matt Gaetz has just pushed me over the top of disbelief and sorrow for this country. We’ll never be the same and we all know Trump will push his picks through a recess congress and He’ll run for a 3rd fixed term using the ‘ consecutive terms’ rule as he twists the constitution into knots.

    1. He won’t need to run for a third term, once he’s in he’ll never leave. I just can’t see him taking the oath of office. Perhaps I’m still numb and refuse to accept such a dystopian outcome…this is not America.😿

    2. I’m hoping the Democratic Senate does what has been done in the past, and that is to not be in recess to prevent Trump from pushing through his picks. They must do this to make his picks get Senate approval, because it is possible if Senate confirmation is required, many of his picks won’t get through.

I think this was the result of some very devious minds in high places from Russia to the Saudis to our own backyard. They learned from their mistakes last time and made the stealing of this election much broader and less easy to trace, since it was spread across so many dirty hands!

    I’m truly struggling with all of this. I’m a gay mixed race white and Native American man. I read Project 2025 and I’m fully aware of what they have in store for the United States, and it ain’t pretty. They are not done with chipping away at women’s rights. They want to revoke their right to vote as well. We all know what they want to do with illegals (read anyone with brown skin) in this country. We can say good by to any of our safety net programs like social security and Medicaid. And as for members of the LGBTQ Community, you better wake up, because we’re next. All they have to do is have a SCOTUS ruling against Marriage Equality, and our marriages will be gone too!

    To be truly frank, I’m truly frightened. I don’t want to die in a concentration camp. And I’m not being overly dramatic. This is now a very threat. I’ve always known that America is a deeply racist, misogynistic, ignorant, greedy place. I just never though it was this bad. I’m utterly heartbroken.

    I’m too old and too poor to flee, besides I have pets I can’t leave behind. So, I’m stuck here. I cling to the hope that America will get through this. Despite the countless lives in Ukraine and Gaza that will be lost. And who knows how many here in the US. Maybe, this is the proverbial kick in the ass that America needs! Too bad it has to drag the rest of us along to summer school to learn that lesson as well.

    Perhaps that should be a question for one of your readings.

    We all know what the MAGA faithful are supposed to learn…

    Well, what is it that we on the other side of the coin who can see through his deceptions and see the truth; what are we supposed to learn from this?

It’s been so triggering as I’m a victim & survivor. I feel like half the country just slapped us all in the face & said we as victims & survivors don’t matter. Our crimes against us are insignificant when it comes to their uneducated belief that somehow they will save on eggs & gas, or that the border issues will be solved in mass deportation & camps. I am not nieve to not believe that some voted for misogyny, racism, & hate. I’ve had to grapple with letting those that I thought respected & loved me dearly go because of their statement with their votes. I’ve had to grapple with my dearest friend for decades, who is gay, voted for him after joining a “Christian church” which changed his thinking & he became extreme in his views, even while still demanding tolerance. My heart feels broken & I’m terrified to be who I am freely in my state of TX. I’m so grateful that I have a husband who cast his vote for me & my rights as well as those for all women & all communities. I’m grateful that i have a husband who respects me & appreciates me as a women above all else. I know that many women across the country do not have that & that fact is scary & heartbreaking.
    Anyway, thank you for all that you do for us in your community & across the world. You truly are an angel & a beautiful shining light in this chaotic darkness. Thank you for giving many of us a place to go for support & resistance. I’m so grateful for you.   39. My friend had a registered Democratic voter told by a democrat at his door that his vote had been canceled. He went to his voting district and wasn’t given a reason his vote was tossed but was allowed to vote again. He was told that he could check in a week to see if if his vote “took.” The democrat at his door said an elderly lady down the street also had her vote canceled but was unable to go to the voting district to vote again (hence the absentee ballot.)

    My mom was a newspaper reporter in the San Francisco Bay Area from the early 60’s through the nineties. She was quite the little trailblazer in her day. She won many, many awards, and was nominated for the Pulitzer six times. Her name was Judy Java. She was a serious,vetted journalist. My sister just retired from journalism last year. Like you,we have printers ink running through our veins…
    The point is this: At home my mom was a metaphysician who studied the Gnostic gospels. She and my Aunt read cards at the kitchen table after work at night. They invented their own system with regular playing cards!😀 My Aunt was able to cleanse people who had messed with ouija boards. She helped the local police find missing people. It was a truly glorious way to grow up for us kids! You remind me of both of those great ladies!💙

Years ago I read a trilogy of books on this kind of life. The first book was called ‘Left Behind’. They were also turned into films. I wondered now if those authors had insight from their guides. Maybe we had clues but turned a blind eye. Now the world is paying the biggest price. I can’t lie, my heart is broken. We will go through 4 years of hell if the world doesn’t blow up first. Though it is low at the moment, my strength comes from the hope you give me. Last night I set my intention and then let it go to the universe.     My only concern is the Palestinians at this stage. I have done quite a bit of research on this issue, the more I look into it the more destruction I see.

    My father was a British Israelite. It is through him that I have an interest in this situation. Some commentators are saying that Israel won’t exist in a few years.

  112. Could you post your sources on why you believe the US economy was in a downturn the past 2 years. 4% unemployment, 2% inflation rate, and 16M jobs created in the past 4 years, with record stock surges.. seems contradictory. I’m interested.

    1. You can Google any of the figures if you wish beyond listening to political spin. Any financial analyst worth their salt has been talking about it since 2022.       The Fed adjusting interest rates to cool the economy should tell you everything you need to know:
      2022: In an attempt to combat rising inflation, the Fed rate increased seven times — from a range of 0.25% – 0.50% in March to 4.25% – 4.50% in December.
      2023: The Fed increased rates four times and left them unchanged four times, ending the year at a 5.25% – 5.50% target range.
      2024: The Fed continued to pause the hikes throughout the year before making cuts in both September and November, in response to cooling market conditions. The current target range is 4.50% – 4.75%.

      And then you look at the rate of inflation in 2022 and 2023:
      2022: The inflation rate was 6.5% at the end of the year
      2023: The inflation rate was 6.4% in January, 6% in February, 5% in March, and 3.4% in December
      2024: The inflation rate was 2.4% in September.

      Factor in the delinquency rates on CREs and consumer loans.

      And also from statistica credit card debt delinquency in line with the above:

These figures on the share of credit card balances that are overdue developed significantly between 2021 and 2024: Delinquencies were at their lowest point in 2021 but increased to one of their highest points by 2024. This is reflected in the growing credit card debt in the United States, which reached an all-time high in 2023.”

      And you get the picture. 2024 saw a cooling in inflation providing some progress for the Biden govt, yet by then debt and financial struggle at the household level was embedded. There is no doubt that people have been struggling to recover post Covid and they voted with their wallets in mind, not their best longer term interests.

      I have just touched the surface of an analysis here and I am not going to write a paper on it for you. Dig around beyond government talking points and government sites and you will see the picture. You have agency and you can use it to inform yourself.

      On a separate note the delinquencies you’re seeing mean the incoming govt if the election result sticks, will have a tough time with economy and everything he is promising tarriffs and tax cuts for the wealthy (increasing govt interest on borrowings and likely leading to govt expenditure cuts on programs that were helping everyday Americans) are only going to make things worse.

  126. I agree with your assessments, Maryann, but living in the US, I’m in Massachusetts, and I feel the need to do something. I hate letting things happen to me and yet for much of my life I have done just that. It’s a restless feeling now. This whole year has been off for me…Aries sun sign, Libra Moon and Scorpio rising. I have felt that things are coming to an end since January 10th. I don’t feel like I’m dying. I’m in good health finally. Lost over 100 pounds on purpose (plant based and loving it). I’m a photographer. Maybe that’s coming to an end? It’s my passion and I love it..I can’t let it go. There are all sorts of things that could happen but that isn’t helpful thinking. I have had a total lack of motivation this year. No direction. Looking back maybe it was about the election and normalcy coming to an end. Life as I know it coming to an end? I have decided though, there is little I can do but to change MY reaction to the chaos. I have to focus on ME and what I want to do…continue my photography and share my images. I shoot landscapes, beaches nature and I especially love the forests and trees. I see them as individuals with their own vibrations and I am drawn to some of them. Maybe that’s what we all need to do right now. Chase our passions and just focus on what really makes us happy. Do what raises your vibration and just because everyone is mean doesn’t mean you have to be as well. Be your version of what the world needs. BE THE LIGHT. What do you think??

  130. Thank you Maryann. For decades, I’ve voted and educated and petitioned… with all people in mind, not just “our” side, and it feels like it was all a waste of time. Now it’s time for the “their” side to wake up and smell the corruption and find out the truth of who’s really been holding us back from having a better life. And we need to demand election truth as well. No more gaslighting. No more “our elections are secure” BS. Give us the unvarnished truth so we can damn well deal with it.

  131. I am not watching any mainstream media. I am even worried about AP. Maybe Reuters? I am putting one foot in front of the other and taking care of myself. This has made me question every thing I have believed. It has really made me take off my rose-colored glasses. I still have faith. America (and the world) have not yet hit a spiritual bottom and that absolutely amazes me. How low do we as a nation have to go? I have faith in America’s people–but it has been shaken.

    I have written the White House, direct lines to Biden and Harris and Walz, and all the progressive news outlets, Midas, Occupy Democrats, BTC, Rachel Maddow, Michael Moore, Vets for Votes. (sp?) and others. Asking on FB to have people write to them as well, asking for a recount of the presidential votes in just battleground states and if there is shenanigans found – to act. I think if 45 were to see himself being found out that might grab his heart. Its midnight here in California and every night I go off to sleep thinking of – what can I do?
    I need to DO SOMETHING, like Michelle Obama offered. I’m a Solutions Gal, not a complainer.
