At the end of last week in the US, one of the former president’s Cabinet picks Matt Gaetz withdrew. Surprising to some, especially given the threatening atmosphere that prevails in Washington DC post election, and more broadly across the US. However when former congressional rep Gaetz spoke to his own party’s Senators, it became clear they wouldn’t support his nomination.
For Democratic Party voters and the former president’s critics, this is a time of great vulnerability and, for some, great fear. Already there are threats of retribution and weaponising the Department of Justice – something he and Maga congressional representatives falsely accused the Biden government of doing. I do not need to labor the obvious fact that the former president projects what he himself is either planning to do or is doing. In other telling news, Maga Senator from Kentucky Rand Paul has decried the former president’s plan to use military on the streets of America to round up migrants. While we’ve seen many of the GOP congress eventually bow to the former president…opposition thus far, at least, shows that pushback can and will work. The midterms loom in less than two years. We all remember the ‘blue tsunami’ days of 2018 when the Democratic Party won back the House and in 2020 retained the House and took the Senate. Perhaps enough GOP reps and Senators do too.
Right now, lines are being drawn in the sand. Everyone is deciding what side of those lines they will stand firm on. Some will waiver and others cave like the Morning Joe anchors who travelled to Mar a Lago in what they described as a ‘civil meeting to keep communication lines open’. Many Democratic Party and Independent democracy warriors have already made it clear they are not taking one step back from their positions before, during and post election. That is, that the former criminally convicted president is more than unsuited for office; he’s a threat to the US Republic, the rule of law and to US citizens and its allies. Highly qualified psychiatric and psychology professionals maintain the former president is in the initial stages of Alzheimer’s. Before the election there was ample evidence of a decline in the former president’s health which has been well documented even by the legacy media.
All this adds to feelings of instability and impending doom that has spread across Democratic Party voters, illegal migrants awaiting certain deportation and those who voted for the former president and are experiencing ‘buyer’s remorse’.
One particular demographic, that of women, are also fearful given emboldened Maga males who perceive they’ve been unleashed by a former president who is a self confessed sexual predator of women.
We could all be forgiven for thinking that the US and even the broader and often unstable world, is a cross between a dystopian horror film and the equally dystopian television series The Handmaid’s Tale.
Yet, when push came to shove and even with the newly minted former president’s decree to punish GOP Senators if they didn’t bow to his will, several thwarted his DOJ Senate pick who has been accused of sex with minors. Do not be surprised though when they pass his newest pick, former Florida AG Pam Bondi…truly weaponising a future DOJ will suit their political needs.
Lines in the sand…we are all drawing them. For some, retreat and rest away from a weak and inadequate US legacy media is the answer. Indeed, the legacy media’s sub standard reporting on the former president’s campaign is one reason he was reelected. They failed to push back against the gross and continual lies and distortions of reality in their reporting, nor call out his bigotry and violent rhetoric in their Opinion sections and when commentating.
However, while the Democratic Party regroups there are many in diverse communication spaces who are pushing back. The electorate still has power which is not so quickly and easily eroded. President Biden’s Democratic Party Senate is passing judicial nominations speedily. The law in the US is an intricate and often unwieldy beast that fails sometimes and holds often. Blue States are banding together to offer greater protections for their citizens. Many of the swing states who voted for the former president have Democratic Party Governors. We should remember, State’s run elections in the US.
There was also some surprising Democratic Party and non partisan judges who won seats on State Supreme Courts…and don’t assume all Republican Party appointed judges will not rule fairly and innovatively in this dystopian-like climate. In Wyoming, a GOP Governor appointed judge struck down the state’s overall ban on abortion by using a law passed following approval of the Affordable Care Act.
There are multiple checks and balances within the US Constitution that, yes, will be sorely tested if the former president takes office, however it is a mistake to assume that fierce opposition to his worst and most destructive actions will fail. It’s now up to everyone to decide where the line in the sand is drawn. For those who continue the fight, the resistance, know you are not alone.
Beautifully written Maryanne. Even though I now live in Italy and I am a dual citizen, the United States is still my country. The country where I was born and the country my father fought for in WWII. What has happened to the U.S. is the only good thing about my father no longer being here. He would literally sit down and cry. Especially considering my only sibling, my sister whom I adore, is in the MAGA cult. I have not, nor would I ever, cut off communication with her, but I have told her constantly that we can not discuss politics. Unfortunately, people in cults find it impossible NOT to bring their insane beliefs into conversations. So if she can’t talk about the orange clown, the MAGA cult and every bullshit lie and conspiracy theory she sees on a far right “news” show, or she gets from her other “patriots” she is in constant communication with – our communication has dwindled to a trickle. Her choice, not mine. It breaks my heart. And it amazes me that now these so called “patriots” are crying that their families are excluding them from family events and their lives in general. Again, it isn’t because they disagree with each other, it is because cult members live and breath the cult. It’s because you can’t have a legitimate debate with someone who does nothing but espouse the lies they have been fed. Anyway, I’ll stop before this becomes a dissertation. Again, thank you for being on our side and sticking with US.

I am grateful I don’t live in the US; however I have friends and relatives that do, and I worry about them. I live in Canada, in a small border town. I am especially worried about how we will be financially impacted if 45 gets in. I am also concerned since we are facing an election of our own not too far in the future, we may find ourselves in a bigger mess than the US. Trudeau is doing his best to help the Canadian people. I am sure he sees an economical crunch or crash coming, due to 45’s path of destruction. He is cutting taxes and increasing pensions, but sadly many Canadians are so determined to get rid of him, they don’t appreciate his efforts. There isn’t anything this man can do that will please them. They are behaving more and more like MAGA people, and totally blind to the hand that feeds them. I am afraid Poillievre (Trump wantobe) will win the next election and Canada will find itself in a similar mess as the US: The rich will get richer and the poor will get poorer. As a pensioner and a senior I am concerned about a very unstable future. Is there a possibility that once Canadians see the horrible mess 45 is causing the US, they will reconsider their voting choice, and reject puppets like Poillievre, Danielle Smith, Stephen Harper, and Andrew Shire?

I am so stressed out by the days ahead. I don’t remember ever going to sleep thinking I would not be safe in my own country. I can’t even watch full episodes of MTN. I don’t know how they do it. I listen enough to stay informed. I oftentimes find myself thinking when did evil get such a strong hold on the US. It’s so upsetting. I waiver between prepping for dark days and total sadness.
Thank you again for your insight. I believe we are in for a major shaking from Universe to wake up and see what we have allowed to rise to power. I also agree that it’s not just the US. The shift in consciousness is going to be a heavy lift but, as you say, we are not alone. Quantum spirituality unites us even if we don’t even know each other. I feel that half of the people who voted in this election betrayed our country. We had 4 years of theatrical drama to know what this former president is capable of doing to our country, and yet, people, including those who say are “working for the people,” choose to look the other way and bow down to him! I’m keeping that faith that there are some in the “conservative” party that will stand up to the horrible policies that he wants to implement in this country !
Where there is darkness, there is light! Just as we create our journey as individuals, we create it as a collective unit too! I truly believe, don’t know how or when, good will win at the end !

This is how I have been feeling lately, it seems peaceful, like the worst has happened, he was elected and now is like the song, it’s not alright but it’s ok, I am going to make it anyway. I took my regular yoga class Sunday and yes, yoga is usually quiet but this class was exceptional, everyone in class, about 20 of us, some regulars, some new, but all were in sink, we flowed in ease and peace, everyone noticed it, it was beautiful. Today another reader had a meditation to visualize Kamala being inaugurated and I was not going to do it, seemed silly, like a child hoping for the impossible but I decided to do it anyway and to my surprise I saw Kamala being inaugurated, her hand on the Bible, Biden in front of her and orange man behind her, screaming and kicking that he was the winner, Kamala kicked him away like a fly, and Ivanka and Melania grabbed orange man and said enough, you lost, enough…I got goosebumps when I saw this I could not believe I saw it so clearly…here is to hoping…but even if it is a childish fantasy I know we will be ok…❤️
